The Access Study Explained.

Please join us on January 30th at 130pm to learn more.

The total cost for diseases such as heart attack, stroke, and diabetes has been estimated at over $93 billion per year in Canada, though this doesn’t begin to describe the toll on patients and families! There are many medications and lifestyle changes that can reduce the impact of these diseases. Recent surveys have identified two major barriers to patients receiving optimal care: the cost of medications and knowledge about managing these diseases.

For instance, some Albertan seniors struggle with paying the out-of-pocket costs for their medications, causing them to stop them. This 3-year study is investigating the impact of providing free preventive medications seamlessly through their existing Alberta Blue Cross Seniors Plan and/or a personalized education program to low income (<$50,000 annual household income) Albertan seniors (65+).

Participants must have a combination of the following:

  • Have Alberta Blue Cross Senior Benefit but no other drug insurance
  • Have ANY ONE of the following:
    • Previous Heart Attack or Stroke, Chronic Kidney Disease, Heart Failure
    • AND/OR have ANY TWO of the following:
      • Diabetes, High Cholesterol, High Blood Pressure, Smoking

If you are interested in participating, you can call us at 1-844-944-8927 (toll-free) and leave a voicemail with your contact information. We will call you back within 48 hours to determine if you are eligible and enroll you in the trial. Travel for study visits is NOT required and your only responsibility is filling out 4 occasional surveys.

Participants are randomly assigned to one of four groups: 1) Receive free medications AND a personalized education program, 2) Receive free medications AND access to general health information, 3) Receive a personalized education program, 4) Receive general health information.

There is a 50% chance of receiving free preventative medications. If you are interested in participating, please call our hotline at 1-844-944-8927.  For more information, please visit our website at www.accesstrial.ca
